IPE SPOTLIGHT Danny Shields
Danny Shields is a lifelong resident of Monroe County and attended school in the M.C.C.S.C. He graduated from Indiana University in 1975 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and attained an M.S. degree in 1977. He also is licensed to teach computer technology. He began his teaching career at Brown Elementary School in 1975, taught at Templeton during 1982-83 and moved to Unionville in the fall of 1983. His first year was in the middle school and he has been in the elementary school ever since. He has been the math teacher for the past 15+ years of the departmentalization.
Danny has officiated high school football, basketball, and softball since his undergraduate days and officiates a full schedule in each sport. He also officiates women's basketball at the small college level. The exercise he gets and the competition keep him involved. He also enjoys the people he is able to deal with and the challenge of trying to do a good job under difficult situations. His
entire family is involved in the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, www.socc.org and
are active in local and state political circles.
He is a firm believer in the concept of personal responsibility and people admitting their mistakes and working to correct them. No person lives a perfect life and mistakes are a form of education if used correctly. To repeat them is harmful, but learning from mistakes can turn out to be very helpful. As an excellent teacher and communicator, Danny is always interested in how parents feel the year is going and how their children are progressing. Parents are encouraged to send correspondence to school with comments, or to use phone calls or email for the same purpose. Notes or phone calls sent to school and delivered to him in the morning will be responded to that school day. Go Cougars!
IPE is honored to spotlight Mr. Shields, his passion for his students and the high caliber of his professionalism. We are grateful for his representation on the Indiana Education Roundtable. Thanks, Danny!
