SPECIAL TRIBUTE

IN LOVING MEMORY OF H. JANE PING

Jane passed away on November 22, 2007.  Her passing is a tremendous loss to anyone who has had the opportunity to cross paths with her.

Jane was born in Prairieton, Indiana.  Jane grew up on a farm and loved to be with all the animals and to climb trees.  She married Warren Ping and loved every minute of her life!  Warren was taken from Jane after only 12 short years of marriage.  Together they had four children, three boys and one girl who are all well accomplished adults.  Upon Jane's passing, she left her four children and three grandchildren.

Jane attended college and completed her undergraduate teacher training at Indiana State University in Terre Haute and received her Master's in Education from Butler University in Indianapolis.  Jane became a kindergarten teacher with Indianapolis Public Schools (School #92) where she remained for over 30 years.  She was dedicated to her profession and to her love of children and it showed everyday.  She demanded and received respect from the children she taught as well as from her colleagues.  All of her teaching career, Jane's focus was on the children of Indiana and teachers' rights.  Jane fought for more than 35 years to help teachers achieve the opportunities and rights they deserve.  Jane wanted teachers to be able to teach our children in the way they should be taught.

Back in the early 70's when teachers were told they could no longer choose the professional organizations they wished to support but had to join their local, state and national union or none at all, Jane became the primary advocate for teachers' choice.  She initiated and became president of an independent professional group for teachers in IPS to give teachers a choice of affiliation.  She met with other like-minded educators and started an independent state teachers' group and served as its president.  All of Jane's heart and soul was put into the development and promulgation of Indiana Professional Educators, Inc. so Indiana teachers might continue to have the right to choose.

When Indiana teachers were being forced to pay fees to the union (even if they chose not to belong), Jane led IPE in the long, tough fight to challenge the action.  A bill to prohibit agency shop was finally passed by the Indiana legislature in the mid 90's.  Because of Jane's leadership and passion to protect teachers' individual rights, no teacher can now be forced to pay a fee to the union every year.  (Fair Share)

Over the years, Jane has donated countless hours working for Indiana teachers and the children they teach.  Her strong personality and the ability and drive to go after what she believed in - and win - will be missed so much.  There was a special type of fight in Jane; she was a go-getter, a mover and shaker.  She believed the impossible could become reality.  No matter how long the road was to be traveled to succeed, failure was not an option.

Jane also served as the President of Chatham Walk Townhouses Homeowners Association where she lived for over 30 years.  In addition, she was the precinct chairperson for the Republican Party until early 2007 when she finally retired.

Jane touched everyone she met.  She always listened to each and every teacher that had the wonderful opportunity to grace her presence.  No matter the issues, Jane acted and better yet, accomplished!  IPE was Jane's dream and it is her legacy upon her passing.  IPE will continue to grow and carry on with all the passion that Jane invested.

Please help us move forward with Jane's legacy.  We still and always will have the dedication, commitment and passion to make sure that Jane's ideals are carried on!  She has left an indelible mark upon IPE and in the hearts of those who have known her.  She will be dearly missed, but never forgotten!
